New Year’s Day
My name is Catherine. I’m 12 years old. In our family’s favorite holiday is New Year’s Eve. In late December, the streets, parks, plazas dress in festive attire. Through the streets and squares stretched garlands colored lanterns. Everyone is preparing for the New Year. And in the main square set a huge tree. We are beginning to prepare for the holiday. On Christmas fairs buy each other gifts, Christmas decorations and tinsel. December 30, we set an artificial tree, and I myself dress up her for the holiday, hang toys, garlands. December 31 I help my mother to cook a festive table on arrival. New Year’s Eve always seems to me a magical and unforgettable. At midnight, after the president’s speech on television, begin to beat the chimes. We congratulate each other a happy new year and make a wish, and then exchange gifts. И хоть я уже взрослая, и не верю, что существует Дед Мороз, но в новогоднюю ночь хочется оказаться в сказке и поверить в чудо. Новый год приносит много радости и веселья. New Year is a cheerful and wonderful holiday. Our days are filled with happiness and beautiful magic. We are listening to and singing Christmas songs, wishing all the happy New Year, and giving presents to each other. It seems that we are children again waiting for the magic.
New Year’s decoration (Новогодние декорации)
According to our country’s New Year traditions, we buy and decorate fur-tree with toys, sweets, electric candles, and a big star on the top of the tree. We also put a figurine of Grandfather Frost under a fur-tree, so he can bring gifts to our house. We work to decorate our house for New Year to bring the holiday spirit: we stick snowflakes on windows, hang a beautiful wreath at the front door, and hang garlands of gleaming tinsel on other doors and walls as well.

Preparing for New Year’s party (Подготовка к празднованию Нового Года)
Most people prefer to prepare for the holiday party in advance. We cook , and jellied just the day before the New Year. As for the main dish, we prefer to bake something in the oven: chicken, beef, pork or even a rabbit. The table is served in a festive way. There are a lot of fresh fruits, vegetables, greens, mushrooms and pickled cucumbers. And of course beverages: champagne, juices, mineral water and strong drinks for those who like them.

New Year’s coming (Новый год наступает)
Normally, we get together for the holiday table about 10 pm to say goodbye to the Old Year. It is believed that the New Year is a family holiday, so we always try to join with relatives and friends. About midnight we turn on the TV and listen to the President’s speech. We listen to him holding a glass of champagne in our hands. He usually talks for about 10 minutes, congratulates everyone on the New Year and wishes all the best. When Kremlin Chimes, the main clock of our country, start to beat, we make a toast and drink the champagne, congratulate each other, and make a wish.

Then we exchange gifts with each other and have some fun dancing around the tree, joking, laughing and enjoying the holiday together. What else do we like doing on New Year’s Eve? We like to go out and watch fireworks display. Many people on New Year’s Eve fire magnificent fireworks over the city and the dark sky shines with coloured lights. But it’s cold outside, and soon we’ll go home. Here we have a cup of hot tea with a slice of yummy dessert. We watch Christmas movies and enjoy a party and our family.

New Year is a great holiday in our country. Everybody likes it very much. It is especially loved by little children. People do not go to work on that day, and children do not go to school. This holiday is considered to be a family holiday. It is usually celebrated at home among the members of the family.
People decorate their houses and usually have a fir-tree which stands in the corner of the room. Those fir-trees are very beautiful. The presents are usually put under these trees. Our parents prepare to this holiday well. They buy a New Year tree, decorate it, buy a lot of tasty food and drinks.
At twelve o’clock in the night people can see the president on TV which addresses them with traditional words of congratulation. At this time people are sitting at the tables to their holiday dinner and enjoy it in a good company. Young people usually organize a dance party and have a lot of fun. Some of them go out into the streets and the squares. The next day friends usually come to wish a Happy New Year to all the members of the family.
The New Year of our life has begun. Everyone hopes it will really be happy.

What is New Year"s?
Does everyone celebrate the New Year? Does the celebration fall in the same day each year? I think New Year"s is a holiday that everyone celebrates but will not be celebrated on the same day of each year. For instance, in my country, Vietnam, New Year"s day is different from the American New Year because we don"t go by the American calendar. We go by the Chinese calendar. Usually my New Year"s celebration is in Mid-January or February; while the Laotians" New Year is in April. The youngsters especially look forward to this ceremony because each one receives a small sum of money wrapped in the traditional red envelope. On these days we eat special cakes that we don"t eat during regular days. It is called sticky rice cake " Banh Chung"?. The American New Year is not a significant celebration as the Vietnamese New Year which focuses on traditions, customs, and religious aspects important to all Vietnamese.
Traditionally, the Vietnamese New year is the lunar New Year Festival. It is the most important Vietnamese holiday, and it is called " Tet Nguyen Dan"?. It is a celebration which combines the excitement of the Fourth of July, thanksgiving, Christmas and the beginning of spring as well as the New Year. The traditional Vietnamese calendar runs in cycles of twelve years. A genie, in the form of an animal figure, dominates each year. They are in the following order: mouse, buffalo, tiger, cat, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, cock, dog, and hog. My favourite holiday is the New Year. I always celebrate it with my family. Before the holiday we often visit our friends and relatives and give them presents. We often go to the city centre to see the beautiful New Year tree on the main square.
We always celebrate New Year at home. A week before the holiday we begin to decorate our house with lights and garlands. We also put up a New Year tree and decorate it with balls, cones, icicles and other toys, tinsel and lights. Under the tree we usually put statuettes of Father Frost and Snow Maiden. We put New Year presents there too.
On the 31 st of December we always cook salads. My mother usually roasts meat and boils potatoes. She always bakes our favourite Napoleon cake. We watch New Year programmes and films on TV.
At about ten o’clock we all sit down at the table and have a meal. Just before midnight we light sparklers and my father opens a bottle of champagne. We watch the president’s speech on TV, and then while the clock is striking midnight, we make wishes and drink champagne. After that we go to the balcony to watch fireworks.
When we come back into the room we open our presents. I usually get a lot of presents for the New Year. And I always try to give presents to my parents, grandparents and friends.
